Animal Protection Charities in Malaysia

I agree with the South China Morning Post on the point that dog has become political animals in Malaysia. Based on my childhood experience in this little town that I grew up in —— Literally translated as "The New City", it is forbidden for Muslims to touch a dog from the religious authorities.

I am not in the right position to comment about the religious teaching but due to approximately 61.3% of Muslim population in Malaysia, it reduces the number of dogs adopted as compared to cats. This situation was told by the Marcomm officer from SPCA Selangor during my recent voluntary experience at the animal shelter.

There are many registered Animal Protection Charities in Malaysia but not all of them have sufficient funding to support their great efforts in helping the animals or having manpower to help on the publicity work. These are some of the suggested organizations:

  • Cares JB Animal Shelter (Recommended by @itsbeenralph) A public non-profit organization (NGO) animal shelter founded in 2001, located in the Southern part of Peninsula (West) Malaysia, Johor Bahru (Border of Singapore). According to the published information from their website with the support media reports, they rescue and care for abandoned, homeless, and abused dogs and cats. Also educate and encourage pet owners to be responsible towards their pets, to prevent the severe stray population.

  • Zero Strays Miri A non-profit organization (Officially registered in 2013), located in East Malaysia (Border of Brunei) aimed at reducing the population of stray cats and dogs through sterilization and advocating a no-kill practice. Their story started with a stray dog rescue named 'QQ' where the founder raised funds for medical fees to help QQ with his urinary issue. *There are many more animal shelters in Malaysia (East & West) that share the same mission with pet rescue, trap-and-neutering, adoption campaigns, and education in creating awareness. But animal blood donation drive is not common and it is initiated by SPCA Selangor.

  • Life Saver Blood Donor Project by SPCA Selangor SPCA (The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) is the oldest animal welfare organization that started in 1824 in England. And SPCA Selangor was one of the earliest animal protection charities in Malaysia officially registered in 1958. They have quite an established team from the published website but according to my recent voluntary experience with them, they need more help in terms of dog adoption, also the new pillar in helping the farm animal welfare program. Besides that, 'Life Saver Blood Donor' is a project to support dogs who need blood during moments of crisis.

Feel free to share your recommended charities with us, we will try our very best to keep the list updated.
